Reducing Saturated and Avoiding Trans-Fats
To read about some of the benefits of finding practical ways to choose Macro-Mediterranean eating over eating out please read our article on Fats and Traditional Eating. It is an in-depth discussion of some of the health risks posed by saturated fats and hydrogenated oils in commercially prepared foods and the Standard American Diet. Please visit our article here.

The China Study: T. Colin Campbell. An important study of the consumption of animal protein in traditional societies and the role that it plays in promoting degenerative diseases like heart disease and certain cancers. This book is highly recommended to those just beginning on their journey toward healthier eating and would like to hear a scientist's opinion on the feasibility and benefits of shifting away from animal products as a main source of protein.

Becoming Whole: Meg Wolff. An amazing account of her struggle with bone cancer, breast cancer and ulcerative colitis and how she credits her adoption of a macrobiotic diet with saving her life. Since her complete recovery from all her illnesses, Meg has made it her mission to increase the world's awareness of the important role diet can play in the prevention of and healing from many of the diseases that make headlines every day. We are proud to count Meg as one of our friends and through getting to know her, we have come to believe her to be one of the more beautiful human beings on the planet.

Dietary Support of Healing

Whether lowering cholesterol and hypertension, easing bloating and other digestive issues, helping to correct blood sugar levels, reducing strong cravings for sweets or salt, correcting nutritional deficiencies, or boosting the immune system, shifting to a more balanced way of eating can be a unique and yet little utilized tool to help our bodies heal. Depending on the condition, a shift to a temporary, simplified "healing diet" or a slower transition into healthful eating is recommended.

Healing Diets

A greatly simplified diet can have its place as a tool to support healing. A simplified diet can help achieve necessary short-term goals quickly and, as healing occurs, some excluded foods can be added back into the diet. We provide this approach as an option, especially in cases where someone is suffering from a serious and debilitating illness and there is convincing or suggestive research that eating a diet based on certain principles has supported the healing of others with the same or a similar condition. In the event that a client is unwilling or unable to work with this type of simplified diet, we believe that it is important to find an approach that offers a more gradual move toward healthier patterns of eating. We have found that, in many cases, clients can achieve many goals quickly with this transitional approach as well.

The following is a partial list of conditions that have been improved and even reversed during a shift to a diet based on the principles that we incorporate into our nutrition counseling:

Since beginning my learning with you I feel like I have become a part of a community of people seeking positive change in their lives. For the first time I am actually enjoying the process of changing my nutritional intake. (I do not want to call this a diet, as I feel like it is a lifestyle change).

The best part of working with you is that you do not expect perfection and do not advocate restriction. Instead you have assisted me and encouraged me to make slow changes. You have provided me with knowledge as to what certain foods do to my body and why eating them or limiting them are beneficial. This way I can make an educated decision.
                   -- Lynn Clancy (Boston)

In January of 2007 Maria Mellano was suffering from fatigue, shortness of breath, anemia and high-fever. In the hospital it became evident that something serious was going on as the medical staff realized she was hemorrhaging into her lungs and kidneys. She was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease.

In this video you will hear her tell her own story of how through a healing diet and a Macro-Mediterranean approach to eating she has, in a short time, regained more health and vitality than her doctors thought possible.
