Our Meals are "Green" Meals
Doing Something Good For Yourself Can Do Something Good For Your Environment
All the traditional ingredients used in our meals have a low carbon footprint when compared to the subset of ingredients commonly used in a modern diet.
Do Food Choices Significanly Impact Global Warming?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the diet of the average American causes the emission of 4.1 tons (8,200 lbs.) of greenhouse gases each year. That means that each day an average American causes the emission of 22.4 lbs of greenhouse gases simply through food choices.
Does Eating a "Green" Meal Really Save That Much?
A diet based on the traditional ingredients we use in our meals is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions between 16.2 and 17.4 lbs each day, causing the emission of just 4.9 – 6.2 lbs per day (4.9 lbs is about equivalent to the emissions from one 5-minute shower). Over the course one month you will save between 453.6 - 487.2 lbs. of greenhouse gases from being emitted into our atmosphere. This represents at least a 72% savings.
If you continue eating this way for a year, you will prevent the emission of 5,913 – 6,351 lbs. (2.95 – 3.17 tons) of greenhouse gases compared to the average American. Again, at least a 72% savings.
Is That A Lot or A Little?
To put this in perspective, the electricity and other energy used in an average two-bedroom apartment in Massachusetts generates about 5.4 tons of greenhouse gases to be emitted into the atmosphere each year. Taking all the generally recommended steps to reduce energy waste in that same apartment (introducing compact fluorescent light bulbs, efficient heating and cooling systems, Energy Star appliances, lowering your boiler temperature, etc.) would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 2 tons each year. Only a 37% savings.
How To Calculate Your Carbon Footprint
If you wish to calculate your own carbon footprint there are many calculators on the internet that can give you a good estimate. We particularly like the one put out by The Nature Conservancy (www.nature.org).
